Flow & Form: Alcohol Ink Painting
Discover the vibrant and unpredictable beauty of alcohol inks while learning how to work with this exciting medium with greater control and confidence. Through guided demonstrations, projects, and personalized instruction, you’ll explore essential techniques including blending, layering, lifting, and directing the flow of colour. You’ll learn how the inks interact, how to troubleshoot common challenges, and when to guide the process—or let the unexpected become part of your artwork. As your skills develop, you’ll work toward more sophisticated compositions and larger surfaces while gaining the knowledge to preserve and protect your finished pieces. Whether you’re new to alcohol inks or have some experience, you’ll build practical skills while developing your own creative approach. Materials & Supplies Students are asked to bring the following supplies to class:
99% isopropyl alcohol
Yupo paper (non-porous synthetic paper; larger sheets can be cut down as needed)
A variety of round, pointed brushes (inexpensive or older brushes are ideal)
Watercolour pencil — any colour except yellow
Small glass jar - Paper towels
Disposable gloves
Plastic tablecloth or protective table covering
Optional: Rocket blower or similar hand-operated air blower. You do not need this for your first class but may wish to add one as you develop your skills.
Alcohol Inks: Recommended brands include Piñata, Copic, and Tim Holtz/Ranger. If purchasing a starter set, look for a good range of colours including yellows, reds, pinks, purples, light and dark blues, light and dark greens, browns, grey, and black. You do not need every colour to get started. Individual colours can be added as you become more familiar with the medium and develop your own palette.
