Children's Drawing Classes
Everything starts with drawing! Drawing is all about looking, making a mark and learning how to refine that mark to express emotion and re-create a reality or feeling. Learning to draw opens up endless possibilities and easily helps students branch off into other art forms. Using Aliki's Seven-Step system, students build skills and confidence as they gain an understanding of drawing fundamentals (such as line and contour, positive shape and negative space, proportion, shading, texture) while exploring a wide variety of media (e.g., crayon, oil and chalk pastel, watercolour pencil, tempra paint, charcoal, ink, graphite.) Students create drawings in a variety of styles from realistic to abstract. The progression of lessons, guide students to developing independent drawing skills while nurturing personal expression and creativity. Class projects are richly balanced with inspirations gathered from a wide range of sources.
Our art school provides a safe environment where young artists feel comfortable taking chances in their work and exploring new ideas and media. The skills acquired through drawing will improve many other important life skills such as confidence, problem-solving skills, perserverence, and focus.
All stages are welcome from beginner to advanced. Each student will receive an art assessment prior to registration in order to determine artistic level and needs. Please contact us at 403.667.7020 or email@example.com to schedule a studio appointment during the weekday evenings at 6:30 - 7:00 pm.

The photo on the left below shows how one student improved her ability to draw realistic bumble bees in one lesson. Although it is a myth, society and peers often see realistic drawing as the gold standard in whether a person is considered an artist or not. Having said that, learning to draw realistically does build artistic confidence. Students are taught not only realistic drawing but different types of drawing, as illustrated in the photo of the abstract flower. This helps students understand that not all drawings are realistic and that we can always change our mistakes into an abstract work of art. We provide a rich art education by teaching our students color theory, art history and vocabulary.
This course is for the students who have taken Aliki's Drawing Fundamentals I (Beginner Drawing) or Beyond the Basics Summer Camp. Having established a strong understanding of the foundational visual vocabulary and drawing technques in Drawing Fundamentals I, students further expand their knowledge and refine their skills through creative exploration (e.g., line and contour, positive shape and negative space, perspective and proportion, light and shadow, shading, value and tone, texture and gesture.)
