Alice (Aliki in Greek) Rathgeber (B.Ed.) has been an art educator for over 25 years. She graduated from the University of Regina, majoring in middle years education, visual and language arts; taught in Saskatchewan; then moved to Calgary to attend the Alberta College of Art and Design.
In 1991, she decided to begin a home-based business that would allow her to stay home with her children. Since then, Aliki’s Art House has taught hundreds of artists, teachers and educators the skill of drawing.
Aliki has taught in a variety of settings including preschools, classrooms (private and public), community, juvenile detention, and senior centres, as well as private functions.
Aliki has also taught a wide variety of ages and abilities from ages 4-84. She has worked with many school systems and has been a consultant and advisor to teachers, principals and school boards. She has taught workshops in both Canada and overseas.
Aliki's practical methodology takes the mystery out of drawing and helps anyone learn how to draw.
Aliki loves to hang out with her husband, daughters, family and friends. She enjoys painting and has exhibited her work throughout Canada and overseas. Her work can be found in local, national and international collections. Aliki is currently teaching, learning the ancient art form of iconography, and continues to pursue the therapeutic benefits of helping others through art in a counselling setting.
Juli Katchur has always had a passion for art and spent her childhood with a pack of crayolas always in hand. Juli is very outgoing and loves working with kids; she especially loves watching kids get excited about the art they have created. She enjoys hiking, biking, music, reading and writing. Juli has a passion for Africa and previously spent seven months in South Africa and Uganda doing mission work with the organization Youth With A Mission. There she helped renovate an orphanage, run afterschool programs for children, health programs and other community work. She is currently attending Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. Juli is in her third year and is majoring in ceramics. Her future plan is to eventually become an art therapist. She is teaching the Mini Masters Drawing Classes.
Deborah Lawton (B.F.A.) studied art at the Alberta College of Art (1982) and also at the University of Calgary. It was here that she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture (1988). She also studied Costume and Set Design at the
U of C.
As a sculptor Deborah has exhibited her sculptures in several locations in Alberta and private collections in Western Canada contain her work. She is passionate about sharing the love of art with her community. She encourages fellow artists to pursue their talent and has been teaching Fine Art in Alberta since 1985. Deborah loves to ignite the potential of young artists and it is this desire that led her, in 2005, to teach for Airdrie Kiononia Christian School as the Sr. Drama and Fine Art instructor.
Active also in the theatrical community, she has designed and constructed costumes and sets for several local theatrical productions. Since 1999 she has worked for the Canadian Badlands Passion Play primarily in the wardrobe department; for the past five years she has filled the role as the Production Designer.
As the owner of Art Branch Studio Deborah is also able to 'branch out' into the many areas of her creativity (sculpture, teaching, graphic design, custom jewellery and clothing).
Deborah works and lives in Calgary with her children Linnea 19, and Bryson 16.
Yanna Papadopoulos has been drawing ever since she can remember. She followed her passion by attending the University of Calgary and graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Developmental Arts Education, followed by a Bachelor in Education majoring in Secondary Education and currently working on her Masters Degree in Leadership. Yanna has been teaching for the Calgary Board of Education for 7 years and is currently at Colonel Macleod School in Calgary teaching Humanities and Fine Arts. Yanna has been working for Aliki’s Art House for almost a decade and will currently be teaching Intermediate Drawing and Adult Beginner Drawing.
Cathy has been studying art and the “Learn to Draw” process with Alice Rathgeber for the past 10 years, completing many workshops, classes and training seminars.
Cathy is thrilled to be a part of Aliki’s Art House as it is unique in its approach to art. It is so very gratifying to watch children and adults have great success in drawing and subsequently seeing art as a true outlet through their day-to-day lives.
Cathy is a wife and mother of two daughters. She is an avid curler who loves family travel, camping and hiking. Together with her husband, she owns and runs an Electrical Design company. As a draftsperson, working on a computer all day, she thoroughly enjoys the departure that art affords her.
Zoe has been passionate about drawing ever since she was little and has been surrounded by a variety of styles. Aliki's Art House has been a big part of Zoe's life for a very long time and has made a positive impact on her. Zoe enjoys collaborating with others and finding inspiration everywhere she goes. Working with kids has always been fun for her and getting to know them and their art. Her experience in many art classes has lead her to pursue her interest in art and sharing her knowledge with others. Zoe has been working at Aliki's Art House for over four years and is now teaching her very own Beginner Drawing Class.
An appreciation for all things creative has motivated Nandini Thogarapalli to explore various areas of artistic expression. However, experiences as a student at Aliki’s Art school invoked a particular interest in drawing within Nandini. Her experiences in art class led her to discover a rather antithetical principle: creativity is nurtured through practice. This principle still guides Nandini’s concentration in teaching art and has motivated her work as an Art Assistant at Aliki's Art House for several years now. Having completed her training, Nandini is presently teaching a Beginner Drawing class.
